There you go Rock, looks like tonight's the night,...with regards to hopefully solving issues! *awaits*

Haplo's Post >>> So I've spent a large amount of time over the last few weeks trying to isolate the problems with pages hanging on the site. I've done the easy stuff, code-wise, to fix what I can -- there is more to be done, but I've been interrupted because there was something more important that might help that I wanted to do.

I am performing a major upgrade to the server. It is going to be increasing from 4gb ram to 16gb, having a 64-bit OS installed, and an SSD (solid state drive) instead of a regular HDD. This equipment arrived a few days ago and I have installed it on the backup server and gotten everything set up, which I am going to be swapping out later with the live server. At approx 4 PM eastern time today, the server will be going down - hopefully for an hour or two tops.

While I can't guarantee this will fix the page hanging issues, it should go a LONG way towards making everything faster, as it really is a MAJOR upgrade to the server. I've got 99% of the migration issues fixed on the server I'm going to be swapping for the live one... however, undoubtedly there will be a small issue here or there -- for example the gamertag images may stop working again until I fix them (as that is one of the very few things I haven't tested fully and it uses a separate component from the rest of the site).

Once the server is backup, I will be diligently working to fix any issues that may have occurred due to the migration, then I will be doing a full round of performance testing to see if the page hanging issues have gone away. Then I will be continuing with on-site code optimization (software improvements to match the hardware improvements).

My best guess at this point is that the page hanging issues is due to excessive I/O collisions on an older, slower hard drive. The server writes many, many files to hard disk every second and I've had other indications that I/O with the hard disk might be the bottleneck that is holding the server back. This should take of any restrictions of that nature, as a solid state drive runs about 10 times as faster as the older sata drives, and the additional RAM means that more things will be able to be held/manipulated in memory without needing to be swapped to disk.

I know that's a lot of technical jargon, but I put it all there for anyone who is interested in the details of what is going on. If it's over your head, just be aware that the site will be down for a while this afternoon/evening, but when it comes back it will be faster than it ever was.

So far so good from my end!

Thankyou so much, for investing in the new hardware, in order to provide us all with a more smoother, faster, more dynamic site. Really appreciate the hard work, time and effort. If it was possible to make a small donation towards the cost of running/maintaining the site, i'd like to contribute in a small way.

Thanks again, Happy Days! =] ToOt-ToOt!

Everything is back to normal. So far, so good. I also agree with Toast. I also would make a contribution. Especially since this is a huge part of my day. Everyday...for over 2 years. Haplo, your loyalty to this site and the players here earns my loyalty and respect. Thank you for everything that you do.

The only problem that I see is that the gamertag links are not showing on website links. But I am presuming that you know about that.

Your still right to voice the issue Rock, incase its widespread, or only certain members.

I dont use gamertags, so i wouldnt know if mine were working or not, i cant confirm either way.

You can see the problem on my PIOTW site here:

http://rockcastlecoky.is-best.net/

The red "x" specifying a broken image. By the way, that car on my site is my "DREAM" car. The exact color that I want too.

That, my friend, is a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. I have wanted one of those ever since I was old enough to drive and I still do.

You are welcome, Toast, for the "flutter" as you say. Glad you enjoyed it. For some reason, I thought you were working with Haplo. Wow, pretty impressive Haplo does all of this on his own. Thanks again, Haplo.

Not a complaint. Just an observation. This upgrade appears to have solved the hang problems. But I have noticed something. To me at least, the site now appears to be slower. It takes longer to go from page to page. It takes longer for games to load. One game that I play VERY, VERY often, [Baseball 2] now takes extremely long to load during peak periods. It took a long time to load before, but now it takes 2-3 times longer.
But like I said, this is not a complaint. It is an improvement. No more hangs. You can get to where or what you want to. It just may take longer to get there. But at least you can get there now.

Oddly (or not), over the last few days, i've also noticed that the site appears to be 'slower'. Not sure if that was part of the new up-grade plan, but its deffinately the same for me too, three four. Not sure i like it though =| *twitches*

I believe...I think I have figured out why the pages are slower now. Sure, no more hang-ups. But pages are slower to load. For sure, you will get to the page...eventually. So that is better.
But doing some research into the slowness problem points to the possible culprit. I now believe the slowness problem is caused by the "ka-ching" sound and the resulting "pop-up" that verifies you recieved gold and XP for doing so. I have noticed that the little "ka-ching" sound and the "pop-up" wants to delay or kind of hang up at times. Just my observation.
